Is it that time of the year already?

Barely have we had a chance to put our Christmas pudding mixer away and we’ve been asked what our new year’s resolutions will be. Our farmhouse is surrounded by countryside so it’s something we aim to do all year round but now’s a good time to share with you the ways we’re making the most of our rural environment.

  1. Savour the countryside. There really is nothing better than getting outdoors and taking a walk to get some fresh air and clear your mind. We always keep to the routes on maps though – aside from the fact that straying off footpaths isn’t good for those we share the countryside with, getting lost is never fun! Here’s a quick guide to the Country Code.
  2. Support your local farmers. We no longer farm poultry (that stopped when we started concentrating on puddings) but we’re still on the family farm so it’s in our blood. Whenever you can, head out to the farmers’ markets nearby and buy local produce, and you help prop up the local economy. We get our butter, cream and milk from our neighbours at Acorn Dairy and not only does it taste wonderful, it helps cut down on food miles.
  3. Help the animals along. It’s tough for lots of our feathered friends out there in the winter so don’t forget to put a little something out for the wild birds if you can. If you’re not sure what to leave for birds, read this handy guide. Hedgehogs could also do with our help so leaving a wild place in your garden gives them a place to sleep, hide and hibernate. Fallen leaves, dead vegetation, twigs and logs piles made out of old bits of wood…they all help.

We hope we’ve given you some inspiration on how to make 2017 a countryside-friendly one, and if you have any further suggestions, feel free to let us know on our Facebook page.
